Piggotts Store
One of the first bakeries in the Strathpine area was built in 1882 by Richard
William Piggott who, with his wife Ellen and other family members, operated
the bakery and, later a general store. Three generations of the family were
involved with the business until it closed down in 1961.
The Piggotts delivered bread to South Pine, Albany Creek and North Pine (Petrie). From North Pine, the bread was sent by coach to Dayboro. Consignments were also sent by train to various stations along the North Coast Line until bakeries were established in these localities.
By the time this photograph was taken, ownership of the bakery and general store had passed to Edgar Walter Piggott, who is one of the men standing to the left of the building. The Piggott family home, to the extreme right of the photo, still stands on Gympie Road opposite the Pine Rivers Shire Council buildings.
Groceries were held in the left hand side of the store and produce on the right. The Model T Ford car at the right is in front of a banana wagon which was used to deliver produce to the railway station and call in for groceries.
